April Trial For Creche Accused

A trial involving some or all of the five former Christchurch Civic Childcare Centre workers charged with indecencies against children in their care has been scheduled to begin on April 26.

After a pre-trial conference in the Christchurch High Court yesterday, which was closed to the news media, Mr Justice Williamson released a minute outlining the directions given by the court.

Under the schedule set down by the court, the Crown has until March 5 to finalise the charges it will lay against the accused. The charges will be filed in the High Court and served on the accused through counsel.

The hearing of pre-trial applications must be started by March 15.

Peter Hugh McGregor Ellis, aged 34, was committed to the High Court for trial on 42 charges earlier this month after a preliminary hearing lasting 11 weeks.

Marie Keys, Gave Davidson, and Janice Buckingham have been committed on four charges each, and Deborah Gillespie on two charges.
