Creche case applications begin
The High Court
yesterday began hearing applications which will decide the nature of the
court proceedings to be faced by four former workers at the Christchurch
Civic Childcare Centre.
Mr Justice Williamson restricted publication of details about the
applications to a description of their broad nature.
Over the next week the court will consider applications seeking separate
trials for the four charged.
It will also consider applications which seek to have some evidence declared
inadmissible.
Other applications seek directions on the way complainants should give their
evidence and the discharge of certain of the accused.
His Honour also gave directions on the way counsel should proceed with an
application seeking the High Court review of the decision by the District
Court to commit the childcare workers to trial.
Peter Hugh McGregor Ellis, aged 34, Gaye Jocelyn Davidson, aged 39, Janice
Virginia Buckingham, aged 45, and Mane Keys, aged 43, have denied charges
they sexually abused children in their care at the creche.
Deborah Janet Gillespie was this month discharged on the one remaining charge
against her.
The discharge came after the prosecution indicated a complainant had been
withdrawn from the case by her parents.
