Remember victims today, says McClay
Commissioner for Children Roger McClay has urged people to think of the
children involved as convicted child sexual abuser Peter Ellis is freed
today.
"The sexual abuse of our children should never be forgiven or forgotten.
Remember child victims today," he said.
He said while there had been a concentrated and lengthy campaign by Ellis's
supporters to clear his name, it was crucial to remember what the final
verdict in the case was.
"It is important to remember that his convictions were the result of a
lengthy legal process involving some 10 judges, evidence from victims and
their families, and two appeals. At the end of this detailed investigation,
the court concluded that Ellis was guilty of the sexual abuse of seven young
children," he said.
Mr McClay said he wanted to speak up for the child victims and their families.
Society needed to ensure children's rights to safety, privacy, and freedom.
