Abuser's denial
by Sarah McGill, Wellington
What I think Sandra Coney is trying to say (June 4) is: "If you are
going to rape and defile, please don't come from the middle classes and
disgrace us".
With respect to her comments on Peter Ellis, abusers may not have horns, but
in 1992, New Zealanders allowed the fact that Peter Ellis was a
"creep" to also identify him as being a child abuser.
Interestingly enough, denial is a common psychological trait of sexual
criminals and those who are falsely accused of sexual crimes. As the case of
Morgan Fahey shows, it is often a somewhat less enduring trait of the guilty.
