Inquiry into Peter Ellis case

The Government has announced it is holding a Ministerial Inquiry into the Peter Ellis case.

The inquiry will be asked to recommend whether Ellis should be granted a pardon.

Ellis was released from prison last month after serving seven years for abusing children in his care at the Christchurch Civic Creche.

Now Justice Minister Phil Goff has ordered an inquiry to look at the reliability of the children''s evidence.

Goff says the inquiry will look at whether there are any matters which give rise to doubts about the assessment of children''s evidence to an extent which would render the convictions of Ellis unsafe and which would warrant a grant of a pardon."

Retired Chief Justice Sir Thomas Eichelbaum will conduct the inquiry and will report to the Government by the end of August.
