The
Christchurch Civic Creche Case |

A final outcome to the case surrounding former Christchurch
creche worker Peter Ellis has been delayed by six months. Ellis was convicted of abusing children at the Christchurch
Civic Creche. The Court of Appeal twice found there was no miscarriage of
justice in his trial, but it said some matters needed further investigation. Retired chief justice Sir Thomas Eichelbaum has been carrying
out a ministerial inquiry into the case, and has asked for a six month
extension. Justice Minister Phil Goff says the delay is regrettable but is
needed to give Sir Thomas time to consult international experts in mass
allegations of child sexual abuse. It has also taken longer than anticipated to arrange legal
representation for the families of children who attended the creche. Ellis was released from prison in February after serving nearly
seven years of a 10 year sentence.
