Sir Thomas Eichelbaum's support for the establishment of a Supreme Court to replace the Privy Council (June 26) calls for comment. Sir Thomas cites as examples only Treaty of Waitangi issues in support of his beliefs.

But what about other cases? What about, for example, the legal fiasco of the Peter Ellis case in which Sir Thomas played a part?

This case alone indicates the need to have an impartial and ultimate appeal court beyond the apparently closed loop of our own system -- that is, offshore.
