The right to a fair trial
Letter to the Editor

M Walker (Letters, July 15) seems to have missed the point about the increasing
call for a full inquiry into the Peter Ellis case.
A significant concern is that the jury did not hear all the evidence. The
prosecution excised anything in the video evidence that might have cast doubt
upon the rest of it, and the trial judge severely limited what of that material
could be shown by the defence. Further, there is disquiet about the methods by
which that evidence was obtained.
Is M Walker aware that the principal child witness subsequently admitted that
she had lied?
The issue is not just about whether Ellis was guilty or not. It is about the
right of all citizens, including M Walker, to a fair trial.
