The National Party is close
to signing up high-profile Queen's Counsel Judith Ablett-Kerr as a list
candidate for the election. Ablett-Kerr was defence
counsel in the so-called Christchurch Poisoned Professor case in the 1990s,
two well-known battered women's syndrome cases, and has also represented
convicted child abuser Peter Ellis in his bid for a pardon. Political experts say
the Dunedin barrister appears set to take one of the five list-only positions
the party has reserved. They say her candidacy
would provide National with a high-profile professional woman candidate at a
time when it has only six women MPs. However there have been suggestions it
could ruffle feathers within the caucus. |
