Lawyers turn backs on aid work

The Law Society says miscarriages of justice are occurring as a result of lawyers turning their backs on legal aid work.

The society says pay rates for legal aid work haven't risen for a decade, making the work uneconomic for many competent lawyers.

It wants the government to review the pay rates, saying they should be tied to inflation.

Law Society president Chris Darlow believes miscarriages of justice are occurring because defendants entitled to legal aid can't get representation or are having their cases dealt with by lawyers who are not skilled enough.

Darlow says if it doesn't act the government will fail in its obligation to provide an effective legal aid service.
