Veteran journalist Frank Haden has
died after a long battle with prostate cancer. His wife, Merle, said Haden, 77,
died on Monday morning. He spent his final weeks at St Joseph's Home of
Compassion in Upper Hutt. He did not want a funeral service;
instead a private cremation would be held. Haden was diagnosed with prostate
cancer in 1998 but revealed his condition publicly only last December, when
it forced him to give up his newspaper columns. They included a long-running
column in The Dominion and The Dominion Post on the use and abuse of the
English language. He worked as a journalist,
columnist and commentator for 50 years. Before his death, Haden criticised
the Health Ministry for not recommending routine prostate cancer screening.
At present, it is recommended only for men with apparent symptoms. He is survived by his wife and
four daughters. |
