Wellington journalist Frank Haden dies

Tributes are being paid to veteran Wellington journalist Frank Haden, who has died of prostate cancer at the age of 77.

Mr Haden spent his final weeks at the St Joseph's Home of Compassion in Heretaunga, in Upper Hutt, where he passed away on Monday morning.

The Haden family says he did not want a funeral service and a private cremation ceremony has been held. Mr Haden was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998 and revealed his condition publicly last December, when he announced he was giving up writing his columns in the Dominion Post and the Sunday Star Times. He leaves his wife and four daughters.

Long-time friend and former editor of the Dominion Karl du Fresne says Haden's controversial style was evident throughout his 50 year career in journalism. He says during the late 1960s, Mr Haden took risks and pushed boundaries as the editor of the then Sunday Times.

"He was eventually relieved of his position, shall we say, by the board of INL and from that time on, he was an assistant editor at the Dominion, and it was during that period, of course, that he became famous, if not notorious as a columnist."
