Convicted paedophile planning Privy Council appeal

Convicted paedophile Peter Ellis hopes to apply to the Privy Council soon, for leave to appeal his conviction.

Ellis served two-thirds of his 10-year sentence after he was convicted in 1993 of abusing children in Christchurch, but he has always maintained his innocence.

His lawyer, Judith Ablett Kerr, says he does not have the backing of someone like Joe Karam, who funded the Privy Council appeal for convicted multiple-murderer David Bain.

But she says Ellis has a strong case, and the petition will be lodged soon in the hope of a hearing before the council law lords take a break over August and September.
