Dunne: Privy Council ruling raises serious issues

Peter Dunne

United Future's leader says the Privy Council ruling on David Bain raises serious issues about the way criminal trials are conducted in this country.

Last night the Council quashed Bain's convictions for the 1994 murders of five family members in their Dunedin home.

The Law Lords ruled a substantial miscarriage of justice had occurred.

Peter Dunne says the Privy Council has identified serious deficiencies in the way evidence is presented in New Zealand courts in cases of this type.

Mr Dunne says there are problems with the way evidence is presented and he wants a review of the rules surrounding evidence and related procedures.
