Top lawyer calls for new legal body after Bain case

A top lawyer says David Bain might still be a convicted killer if he had not had the backing of powerful friends.

Bain is due for a bail hearing in the next few weeks, after the Privy Council overturned his 1995 conviction for murdering five members of his family.

Bain was backed through his long legal fight by ex-All Black Joe Karam.

Associate Professor of Law Scott Optican says it should not be left up to fate to see justice done and is calling for the establishment of a new body to examine dubious convictions.
