Ellis loses bid for Royal Commission

Convicted paedophile Peter Ellis has lost his bid for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into his case.

Mr Ellis was released in 2000 after serving seven years of a 10-year jail term for molesting children at the Christchurch Civic Creche.

He maintains he is innocent.

Associate Justice Minister Rick Barker says a Royal Commission cannot determine criminal responsibility and if Mr Ellis wishes to pursue whether a miscarriage of justice has occurred he can appeal to the Privy Council.

Some cases heard before New Zealand's Supreme Court was established in 2004 still have the right to go to the Privy Council.

It is understood Mr Ellis's lawyer is preparing a petition seeking leave for an appeal.
