Uncle charged with girl's murder

The uncle of a Zimbabwean girl who died in Christchurch last month has appeared in court, charged with her murder.

Family members have been in court to support the man charged with murdering 10-year old Charlene Makaza.

Charlene's uncle George Gwaza, 54, faces one count of murder and two of sexual violation.

Charlene died in hospital a day after being found in bed struggling for breath four weeks ago.

She had been adopted by her uncle and aunt and lived at the house for two years.

Several members of Gwaza's immediate family, including children, were in court for his appearance. He was not required to enter a plea and has been remanded in custody for a further court appearance next week.

An application for interim name suppression was denied, with the police saying the case had gained a high public profile.
