Case referred to Solicitor General

In an unusual move, prosecutors have asked the Solicitor General to take another look at the case of a man who has been acquitted of murdering his niece in Christchurch.

George Gwaze was last week cleared of having played any part in the death of his 10 year old niece Charlene Makaza.

During the High Court trial, the Crown's case was that Mr Gwaze suffocated Charlene while sexually abusing her.

The defence said she died of natural causes stemming from her HIV infection.

The Christchurch prosecutor Chris Lange says he has referred the case to the Solicitor General, but will not comment on the reasons why.
