Review sought of murder acquittal

In an unusual move, prosecutors have asked the Solicitor General to review the case of a man who has been acquitted of murdering his niece in Christchurch.

George Gwaze was last week cleared of having played any part in the death of his 10-year-old niece Charlene Makaza.

During the High Court trial, the Crown's case was that Mr Gwaze suffocated Charlene while sexually abusing her.

The defence said she died of natural causes stemming from her HIV infection.

The High Court jury returned its not guilty verdicts on Wednesday after deliberating for three and a half hours.

The Christchurch prosecutor Chris Lange says he has referred the case to the Solicitor General, but will not comment on the reasons why.

A spokesperson for Crown Law has confirmed the matter has been referred to the office for review, but will not make any further comment at this stage.
