Gwaze unruffled at prospect of appeal

George Gwaze is confident, despite the possible appeal following his not guilty verdict last week.

The 56 year-old endured a four week trial at the High Court in Christchurch, accused of the murder and unlawful sexual violation of his 10 year-old niece Charlene Makaza in January 2007.

It is understood Crown prosecutor Chris Lange wants to appeal the not guilty verdict, in what has been described as a rare legal move.

In a short interview with our newsroom yesterday, he confirmed he was aware of the possible appeal and was surprised by it. He says he had not expected it but was still confident of a positive outcome.

With that, the phone went dead and when we tried calling him back, his wife told us he was not talking to the media. Neither Mr Lange or Mr Gwaze's lawyer Johnathan Eaton could be contacted.
