Sick culture not widespread - police chief

Police chiefs admit behaviour which reportedly took place in the South Auckland district is sick.

They are promising a thorough investigation into photos of a young offender wearing a demeaning sign around his neck, and of a masked officer brandishing a machete and axe.

A district court judge has criticised the actions, saying that "the culture is as sick as the joke".

Assistant Commissioner Peter Marshall agrees it is appalling but denies the sick culture is widespread.

He told Newstalk ZB's Larry Williams the incidents involve just a few officers at one police station - Wiri and is promising a thorough investigation to identify the culprits.

He says the matter is being referred to the Police Complaints Authority, and says he will get to the bottom of it.
