Top cop gets support over leaked memo

South Auckland's police chief says he has got the support of the force in his criticism of officers who go public with police problems.

Counties Manukau District Commander Steve Shortland has himself been criticised over a leaked memo describing colleagues who run to the media as "traitors".

He suggested they did it for money, sex or because they are stupid.

Superintendent Steve Shortland says he has no regrets about the content of his memo and the support he has had from police in all districts has been overwhelming.

He says the majority of police know exactly what he is talking about and are right behind what was said in the memo.

He says his article, in the police district's internal newsletter, follows anonymous information sent to the media which falsely suggested an officer had refused to obey orders from a senior.

Superintendent Shortland says he was targeting a small number of police officers who maliciously and scurrilously leak information to embarrass the police or undermine investigations.

He says there is a distinction between whistle-blowing and malicious releases for a personal agenda.

Steve Shortland is promising to protect whistle-blowers speaking out with genuine concerns about the force.
