denies beatings
Alleged beatings of some suspects, the humiliation of others and the
"shabby" treatment of police files came under scrutiny when a
senior South Auckland policeman gave evidence in his own defence yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Solomona - who faces four charges of assault and one
of assault with a weapon - dismissed as "absolutely false"
accusations that he beat and abused three suspects, in separate incidents, in
February and March last year.

Sergeant says joke typical of police
Photographing a young suspect wearing a sign saying "I belong to Senior
Sergeant Solomona" was a typical police station joke across New Zealand,
the Papakura District Court heard yesterday. Sergeant John Nelson told the
court he had seen similar stunts in numerous police stations, but said not
everyone would get the joke. "The humour would not be understood by
non-police officers."

New

by Rachel
Grunwell - Assault claims have forced
a senior police officer in an elite emergency squad to stand down. South
Auckland senior sergeant Anthony (Tony) Solomona, who is married to a judge,
has been off duty for about a week since the police department started
investigating claims he assaulted five complainants. Police management are
sensitive about the matter because Solomona is a senior officer and his wife
is the country's first female Pacific Island judge, Ida Malosi.
