Alleged beatings of some suspects, the humiliation of others and the "shabby" treatment of police files came under scrutiny when a senior South Auckland policeman gave evidence in his own defence yesterday. Senior Sergeant Anthony Solomona - who faces four charges of assault and one of assault with a weapon - dismissed as "absolutely false" accusations that he beat and abused three suspects, in separate incidents, in February and March last year.

Photographing a young suspect wearing a sign saying "I belong to Senior Sergeant Solomona" was a typical police station joke across New Zealand, the Papakura District Court heard yesterday. Sergeant John Nelson told the court he had seen similar stunts in numerous police stations, but said not everyone would get the joke. "The humour would not be understood by non-police officers."

A policeman facing assault charges after allegedly beating and verbally abusing three young complainants on three separate occasions appeared in the Papakura District Court yesterday. Senior Sergeant Anthony Solomona of Manukau-Wiri police faces five charges of assault and one of assault with a weapon, stemming from incidents alleged to have happened last February and March. He denies the charges, and is on bail.

South Auckland senior sergeant Anthony (Tony) Solomona, who is married to a judge, has been off duty for about a week since the police department started investigating claims he assaulted five complainants. Police management are sensitive about the matter because Solomona is a senior officer and his wife is the country's first female Pacific Island judge, Ida Malosi.
