PM ponders response to psychiatric hospital abuse allegations
by Audrey Young

The Prime Minister yesterday raised the possibility that complaints about abuse in mental hospital could be dealt with through mediation.

However, she said the Government needed more information before it decided between that approach or an inquiry

Helen Clark was commenting after weekend reports that the complaints have ballooned to cover more than 200 former patients in the 1960s and 1970s.

"The complaints are running across a number of institutions, a number of different types of complaints," she said.

"[They are] very, very serious allegations so a consistent approach will need to be taken to dealing with them."
