Exposing abuse
Letter to the Editor
by Steve Green,
Executive director Citizens Commission on Human Rights Auckland

It is good to know that only a tiny number of people support psychiatry and its abusive treatments. The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) has made public exposes and it is not before time. Christchurch has one of the highest anti-depressant uses in New Zealand, and electric shock is still used on its mentally ill.

Psychiatry endorses drugs for children with unproven learning disorders, and has been promoting anti-depressants for teenagers, which are now under serious question.

Our commission has exposed deep sleep treatment at psychiatric hospitals as well as the abuse of young people in Lake Alice. The Government has acknowledged these abuses and in most cases has compensated the victims.

CCHR is an international watchdog on mental health, co-founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and Dr Thomas Szasz.

There are over 130 chapters in more than 30 countries working towards eliminating psychiatry's fraudulent practices and holding it accountable for its harmful treatments and human rights violations.
