Lake Alice payout topped back up by court

A former Lake Alice patient has won a four year battle to have his compensation paid out in full.

Paul Zentveld was awarded 115-thousand dollars in compensation for the way he was treated during his stay at the psychiatric hospital near Bulls.

His lawyer Grant Cameron says the Ministry of Health took about 30 percent of the amount to create parity between a first group of claimants who paid their own legal fees and Mr Zentveld's group who got legal aid.

In the Wellington District Court ruling, Judge Tom Broadmore said Paul Zentveld was entitled to the full amount, plus interest.

Grant Cameron says the decision sets a precedent for the other claimants. Action is now expected on the other 86 claims that were cut.
