Former Sallies captain on sex charges

A former Salvation Army Captain has been committed to trial on historical sex charges dating back to the 1970s.

Name suppression has been lifted for John Francis Gainsford, 69, who faces 28 charges of sexual violation and other indecencies on young people. He will stand trial at the High Court in Timaru.

The charges arise from Gainsford's time as the manager of the Bramwell Booth Salvation Army Children's home at Temuka in South Canterbury between January 1973 and 1975.

Police say investigations into the alleged offending are continuing.
