Witness testimony at sex abuse trial

The Crown embarked on the second day of witness testimony on Tuesday in the trial of a former Salvation Army captain on historical sexual abuse charges.

John Gainsford pleaded guilty to four charges in the Timaru High Court on Monday, including three of indecently assaulting girls under 12.

The 69-year-old is facing a further 23 charges involving seven complainants from the time he worked at the Bramwell Booth Salvation Army Children's Home at Temuka in the 1970s.

Prosecutor Tim Gresson told the court he intends to call on the complainants over the next few days plus others at the home at the time.
