Sallie jury retires to consider verdict

The jury at the trial of a former Salvation Army Captain has retired to consider its verdict in Timaru.

John Gainsford is defending multiple sex abuse charges dating back to the 1970s when he was manager of the Bramwell Booth Salvation Army Children's Home in Temuka.

The trial has been going on for the last two weeks.

This morning the judge summed up providing the jury with a spreadsheet to help them work through their decision making process.

They must decide if Gainsford is guilty of 23 charges after he pleaded guilty to four. The defence argued the remaining charges stem from "girl-talk" at the school at the time and are unreliable and exaggerated. The Crown has stated it cannot all be made up.
