Former Sallies captain found guilty

A former Salvation Army captain found guilty of sexually abusing children will be sentenced in December.

Sixty-nine-year-old John Gainsford has been found guilty of all but one of the 23 charges laid against him. The offences date back to the 1970s, when he was manager of the Bramwell Booth Salvation Army children's home in Temuka.

The jury deliberated for more than nine hours before reaching their decision.

Gainsford had earlier admitted four charges and was remanded for sentencing on December 11.
