Salvation Army admits it should have acted over sex offending

The Salvation Army admits it should have acted differently over allegations of child sex abuse against a former staff member.

The admission follows the conviction of former Salvation Army captain John Francis Gainsford on 22 of 23 historical child sex charges, from his time as manager of a children's home in Temuka in the 1970s.

A High Court jury convicted Gainsford, 69, on Friday night and he will be sentenced in December.

A spokesperson for the Salvation Army, Major Ross Gower, says the organisation let down his victims.

The victims are planning to take further action against the Salvation Army over its failure to act on the abuse
