Gainsford found guilty on 22 charges

Former Salvation Army captain John Francis Gainsford has been found guilty of 22 indecency and rape charges.

He was found not guilty of one charge of indecency in the High Court in Timaru last night.

Gainsford, 69, of Auckland, had pleaded guilty to four counts of indecency, but not guilty to 23 counts of indecency and rape.

The jury in Timaru retired at 11.40am yesterday and returned about 10 hours later with the verdicts.

Eight complainants– seven females and a male – alleged the offences occurred in the 1970s when Gainsford managed a former Salvation Army children's home at Temuka, South Canterbury.

In his summing up Justice Fogarty said Gainsford's confession to four counts should not sway the jury about the other charges
