Army cadet ill-treatment report delayed
NZPA

The report on allegations of ill-treatment at the army's former cadet school at Waiouru will be delivered in August, Defence Minister Mark Burton said today.

Retired High Court Judge David Morris was due to report by the end of this month but ill-health has forced an extension.

Mr Burton said Mr Morris was recovering at home from a serious heart condition.

Mr Morris was appointed in October last year to investigate the allegations. Some of the claims go back to 1948.

The inquiry was ordered after former army communications officer Ian Fraser published a report on an online news service alleging that cadets were subjected to assaults and abuse at the cadet school.

Reaction to the report included hundreds of corroborating accounts from other former cadets.

The terms of reference for the inquiry include the investigation of any criminal offending at the school from 1948 until it closed in 1991.
