National’s spokesman
for Political Correctness Eradication, Wayne Mapp, has asked the Human Rights
Commission to investigate whether the policy of Air New Zealand and Qantas
not to seat men beside unaccompanied children is a breach of the Human Rights
Act. “It is the proper role
of the HRC to deal with real issues of discrimination that are potentially breaches
of the Human Rights Act. A number of incidents have received extensive
publicity this week. “The first involved
Mark Worsley, a passenger on Qantas, who was asked to move by an airline
representative when it was found he was seated beside a child. “The second involved a
trans-Tasman Air New Zealand flight, on which Mr and Mrs Price were
travelling with their two children. Mr Price was seated beside an
unaccompanied child and was asked to move. “Two other men have
also contacted me after being asked to move seats on Air New Zealand flights
where they were seated beside unaccompanied minors. “It is clear to me that
this is a breach of section 21 of the Human Rights Act which prohibits
discrimination on the basis of sex, and I have asked the HRC to investigate,”
says Dr Mapp. |
