Sean Roberts (Letters, Dec 7)
suggests that "if parents want their child to fly unaccompanied, they
buy all three seats" to avoid the issue of their sitting next to men.
Great idea but the reason many fly unaccompanied is that they are off to
spend half the holidays with dad. When I lived in Perth, we often
took my wife's two New Zealand children to Perth Airport, whence they flew to
Auckland to holiday with their dad, who was waiting to collect them.
Ultimately, so they could be near him and see him every second weekend, we
moved to New Zealand. Children travelling for quality
time with their father (or mother) is a fact of life in these days of high
divorce rates and one partner moving to another city, island or country to
start a new life or to get the right job to support the cost of two homes. This issue won't go away --
airlines should be prepared for such young unaccompanied travellers.
