What a terrible time poor men are
having. First they get heartily offended when airlines respond to mothers'
concern about seating their unaccompanied children next to strange men. This
has nothing to do with role models; a stranger on a plane cannot substitute a
good father figure, as so many outraged men seem to be saying in their
outraged voices. Now the issue of fathers'
financial support for the children they are not around to raise has attracted
the attention of Lianne Dalziel, who is usually so intelligent. She has seen fit to support a
petition that tries to decrease absent fathers' contributions to their
children even more than most already make (Dec 6). If men paid more attention to
their collective responsibilities than to their wounded pride which catapults
them into victim mode, obsessed about "their rights", then maybe
parents wouldn't need to be worried about their children sitting next to
strange men on planes, fathers would themselves expect to contribute
equitably to the children they are not around to rear, and women would be
able to walk the streets safely at night.
