I am a male, which so far puts me
offside with your correspondent, Laura Keddell (Dec 17). Hopefully this
explanation of my maleness will calm her regarding me individually. I'm not heartily offended by the
airlines' decision not to let me sit next to unaccompanied children. There
would be enormous relief if they extended the ban to dreary feminists. Give
me a bright child's company any day. Thirty-seven years ago I started
teaching children. It can't be achieved without intimate proximity and oodles
of patience. Parents are always welcomed to watch. None ever complained about
the teaching methods. Most left and went off to do the shopping. Many former students bring their
children round home here. Some tell me I'd been more a father to them than
their own. I've done my best by them. We hug unabashedly and treasure the
friendship. In the meantime, my own family has
been paid for, succoured and defended. No-one's been sent anywhere
unaccompanied on a plane. My grandchildren drop in on me
regularly. I treasure them too. And hug them publicly. Laura Keddell can rest assured she
can carry on walking the street at night with no hindrance from me. If she needs help and I'm nearby
I'll spring to her aid without a second thought. If she's unaccompanied on a
flight, I'll do the same. And then we'll be friends too.
