The Transport Safety
Minister says he knows of only a handful of people who believe they are being
unfairly treated by a new law banning sex offenders from driving buses and
taxis. The legislation comes
into effect today, stripping hundreds of drivers of their right to operate
public transport. Some of those affected
say they are being punished for minor offences such sleeping with their
under-aged girlfriend, many decades ago. Minister Harry
Duynhoven says there are more than 38,000 people with passenger service
endorsements on their licences, but he knows of only 10 or 11 who say they
have been unfairly treated. He says he is prepared
to ask Parliament to review the law.
