The Transport Minister
admits that Parliament sometimes makes mistakes when it comes to lawmaking. Legislation will be
tabled this week to adjust a botched amendment to the Transport Act that has
forced people out of their jobs. The current laws
prevent bus and taxi drivers with convictions for violence or sex crimes from
carrying passengers. Scores of people with minor convictions from decades ago
were affected. Minister Harry
Duynhoven says occasionally, these things just happen. He says the
legislation went through the normal select committee scrutiny before being
passed. The new legislation,
which corrects the situation, has the support of all sides of the House. |
