Parliament will go into
urgency to right legislation that saw some bus and taxi drivers lose their
jobs. The change to the
Transport Act meant people with a criminal record were not allowed to hold a
passenger licence. More than 100 bus and
taxi drivers lost their jobs for minor crimes or ones several decades old. The bill passed its
first reading earlier this month and has already been reported back from
select committee. The new amendment will tighten the law to apply to
offenders who have been imprisoned or who have committed serious offences. It is expected to get
cross-party support and pass tonight. |
