Sir--While I can
sympathise with the concerns expressed by schoolteacher Malcolm Long (July
12), I also know many adults who are grateful to those trailblazing
"radical feminists" who were courageous enough to confront those
who abused them. As a result of their
courage we are now seeing increasing numbers of adults, especially men, able
to disclose the abuse they were subjected to as children and receive help. Sad but true, those who
offend against children, and especially against boys, include male
schoolteachers. We don't have to look far afield here in Christchurch for an
example. At St John of God a number of boys were subjected to sexual assaults
by the very men who were responsible for their care. I can assure you that
every victim who has gone through a sexual abuse trial would also like to see
the laws relating to giving evidence changed.
