Primary teachers can now touch
students under revised guidelines. The NZEI is releasing the new
rules which are a revision of the 1998 code of practice preventing all
physical contact between teachers and students. President Irene Cooper says the
old guidelines were established when there was higher level of anxiety in the
community about contact between adults and children. She says these new guidelines
state it is acceptable for teachers and students to come into contact, when
carried out in a professional and responsible manner. Cooper says teachers still need to
be aware that physical contact with students and children can be
misconstrued. The organisation representing
parents is welcoming the revised guidelines. Parent Teacher Association vice
president Margaret Mooney says they are pleased with the review. |
