Anglican Church settles sexual abuse claims


The Anglican Church has made a confidential settlement with people sexually abused by a priest.

The church released a statement indicating "longstanding" abuse committed by an Anglican priest in Christchurch and Auckland had been addressed "in a spirit of justice and concern for the pain it caused".

"It was mutually agreed that the particulars and provision of the settlement remain the private business of those involved and may not be disclosed," the statement said. Bishop of Christchurch David Coles was unavailable for comment yesterday, and the church's media officer said no further details would be released.

The church refused to confirm whether the settlement involved former Christchurch priest Rob McCullough who allegedly abused women in the 1970s and 1980s.

Whistleblowing author Louise Deans and two other women who say they were sexually harassed and abused by McCullough received payouts from the Anglican Church last year. All three had been candidates for ordination in the Christchurch diocese, under McCullough's guidance.

Church leaders were first alerted to the alleged misconduct by five women in 1989.
