Police chief plans change
by Kris McGehan

Waikato police will be spending less time behind their desks and more time on the streets if the district's new boss has his way.

Newly appointed Waikato district manager, Superintendent Clint Rickards, is an advocate of "high visibility" and proactive policing. He believes a stronger police presence on the street will help develop strong community links.

Currently Gisborne district commander, he will become Waikato's highest ranking policeman in a month. Aged 37, he is the country's youngest district commander.

Mr Rickards has had a varied police career, which includes stints in CIB. Before becoming Gisborne district commander, in November last year, he was rural area controller and relieving district commander for the South Auckland police district.

Mr Rickards, who is of Tainui descent, said he was keen to establish strong police partnerships with Maori around the Waikato.

Mr Rickards said the Waikato district had been performing well under the leadership of superintendent John Thurston and he hoped to continue that.

Mr Thurston takes voluntary redundancy at the end of this year.
