Commissioner launches rape review

The Police Commissioner has launched a review of an investigation of rape allegations, made against three police officers several years ago.

Today's Dominion Post newspaper has published allegations of a 1986 rape in Rotorua, later incidents of sexual assault and a police cover-up.

A woman, Louise Nicholas, then a teenager, claims two former officers, and a serving assistant commissioner, Clint Rickards, pack raped her when they served in Rotorua.

Commissioner Rob Robinson says he was made aware of the allegations in the 1990s.

He believed it was investigated and reviewed, and the officers had been cleared.

But Mr Robinson says it is a new matter that the integrity of that process is being questioned.

He says Assistant Commissioner Rickards is on a day off, but on Monday his position as Auckland's top policeman will be reviewed.
