Allcock to go to Olympics instead

Wellington: Inspector Gary Allcock has taken over the police security liaison role for the New Zealand team at the Athens Olympics this year.

He has replaced Waikato district commander, Superintendent Kelvin Powell, originally picked for the role, but who has been stood down during a police investigation into historic rape allegations against a number of police officers.

"It is now appropriate for Insp Allcock to take this function through to, and including, the Athens Games," a statement from the office of the police commissioner said.

"Insp Allcock was the security liaison officer for the successful Commonwealth Games in Manchester during 2002 and is well known to both the Olympic team managers group and athletes."

Insp Allcock is an inspector at the police central communications centre in Wellington. He is a former chief executive of New Zealand Rugby League, but left the job in 2001 to return to the police force. - NZPA
