Police legislation on hold
NZPA
Wellington:
Legislation to reform the Police Complaints Authority is on hold until the
commission of inquiry into rape allegations against police officers has
reported to the Government.
The Independent Police Complaints Authority Bill increases membership of the
authority from one to three, with the chairman a retired judge.
Justice Minister Phil Goff introduced it to improve public confidence in the
inquiries into complaints against the police.
Mr Goff's spokesman said the commission of inquiry's report could raise issues
which might mean changing some aspects of the Bill, and the Government wanted
to consider that before the legislation was passed.
The Police Complaints Authority (Conditional Name Protection) Amendment Bill is
also before Parliament.
