Commission into rape claims underway

Public meeting into police handling of rape allegations and police standards gets underway with public meeting in Wellington

The Commission of Inquiry into the police handling of rape allegations gets underway today.

It is being carried out by High Court Judge Bruce Robertson and former senior public servant Margaret Bazley who are holding a public meeting in Wellington to outline the process for the inquiry over coming months.

The commission is still taking registrations of interest from people wanting to be part of the inquiry, which has been set up to investigate how the police have handled complaints of sexual assault against officers or their associates.

It will also examine police standards and codes for its officers' personal sexual conduct.

The inquiry was sparked by accusations by Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas that her allegations of pack rape by police officers were never properly investigated.
