Inquiry opens doors to other complaints

Police rape Commission of Inquiry ready to hear from anyone who has relevant evidence to give

One of the first people to be hired by the police rape Commission of Inquiry will be someone to gather complainants' stories.

The seven-month-long Commission held its first meeting in Wellington this morning, saying it has now heard of additional individuals with potential grievances.

The Government ordered the inquiry following extensive publicity about several historic cases.

Commissioner Justice Bruce Robertson says the staff member will liaise directly with those affected.

He says the Commission will better achieve its task by hearing stories in people's own words, not via pre-prepared statements.

The Commission's already said it may not meet its November 1 deadline.

Justice Robertson says anyone with a relevant story to tell who contacts the Commission in reasonable time will be heard.
