The police have
rejected claims they prevented a commission of inquiry into police conduct
from hearing how police handled a high-profile rape case. Judith Garret, whose
rape claim against several police officers helped spark the commission,
believes police reopened her case before the inquiry began to stop it hearing
how her initial claim was handled. Last month the
commission restarted its preliminary investigations in private saying it will
not look at any complaints under police investigation or before the courts. Garrett and another
complainant Louise Nicholas say the criminal investigations won't look at the
way their cases were handled. They want to be heard
by the commission after their cases are completed. Police say have had no
input into the changed terms of reference for the Commission of Inquiry. |
